Rehearsing the Museum

Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (CFCCA) and University of Salford Art Collection are pleased to present the UK premiere of a new film by Marysia Lewandowska. Rehearsing the Museum (2018), commissioned by Entrée gallery in Bergen, Norway, follows a two-year research project at the Asia Art Archive in Hong Kong.

Filmed at KODE Museum in Bergen, Shanghai and Beijing and scripted collaboratively with Taiwanese Beijing based writer Zian Chen, the film is structured as a cabinet of curiosities using archival footage and a narrative that unfolds through a dialogue between two women. The dialogue exposes the diverse backgrounds and aspirations of the women, revealing sensitivities around property development and the contested ownership of museum artefacts.

Rehearsing the Museum reflects on the origins of the market for contemporary Chinese art, the museum boom and the increasing pressure western museums are experiencing from strong economies such as China to face post-colonial consequences.  It can be seen as a sequel to the earlier work, Museum Futures. Distributed (2008) made in collaboration with Neil Cummings. Both films will be screened during the evening and followed by an in-conversation between the Marianna Tsionki, Research Curator, CFFCA and University of Salford, and curator Helen Kaplinsky.

Date: Wednesday 17 January, 2019, 6 – 8pm
Venue: Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art, Manchester
Admission: £5, includes wine or tea on arrival. Bookings via Eventbrite.
