This is Shanghai

Artists include: Liang Yue, Shi Yong, Yang Fudong, Yang Zhenzhong, Yuan Gong, Xu Zhen, Zhang Peili and Zhou Xiaohu.

Following the success of the PRESENCE exhibition we are pleased to announce a new co-commission for the Collection with Liverpool City Council and Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool, as a legacy of the partnership.

This is Shanghai is an exhibition that explores and celebrates the relationship between Liverpool and its twin city in China.

Artist Liang Yue undertook a short residency in Liverpool in April 2018. Although this was her first visit to the city, it appeared strangely familiar to her. The Pier Head reminded her of the Bund back in Shanghai, ‘the noise of traffic, running up and down near the dock, and the smells …are redolent of Huangpu River’.

Presented by Culture Liverpool in partnership with Open Eye Gallery, This is Shanghai is staged at locations across Liverpool’s iconic Waterfront.

This is Shanghai is showing alongside Liverpool Biennial 2018 and is part of the celebrations for Liverpool 2018, marking the city’s tenth anniversary of holding the title of European Capital of Culture in 2008.

Exhibition dates: Saturday 14 July – 7 September 2018
Opening hours: Tuesday – Sunday, 10am – 5pm.
Venue: Cunard Building, Liverpool

Art Collection artworks in Royal Academy Takeover

This year Salford Museum and Art Gallery and Ordsall Hall are bringing The Royal Academy of Arts to Salford to help celebrate the Academy’s 250th anniversary.

The University of Salford Art Collection is loaning two works for this exhibition; Elisabeth Frink, Shearwater, 1975 and David Hockney, Pool made with paper and blue ink for book, 1980.

Founded in 1768, The Royal Academy of Arts exists to promote art and artists. Led by world leading practicing artists and architects, they do this through exhibitions including their annual summer show, education and debate. Royal Academicians are voted in by their peers and make up some of the greatest names in painting, printmaking, sculpture and architecture.

There are many works by Royal Academicians in Salford’s collections. Some of which have not been on public display for a number of years.  The Royal Academy Takeover will pick out the hidden gems from the collections, complemented by loans from other institutions.

The exhibition, over both venues, unites traditional landscape and portraiture with modern art; includes war artists from World War II; and shows prints, drawings and sculpture.

Visit the Salford Royal Academy Takeover exhibition page for more details.

Exhibition dates: Saturday 30 June 2018 – Sunday 24 February 2019
Opening hours: Closed Monday. Tuesday – Friday 9.30am – 4.30pm; Saturday and Sunday 11.30am – 4pm.
Venue: Salford Museum and Art Gallery, Salford

Please note: the Royal Academy Takeover at Ordsall Hall will be on display from Sunday 20 May to Sunday 7 October 2018.

Lubna Ali: My Show, My Rules

For her first solo exhibition at PAPER, Ali highlights an issue affecting Muslim creatives. As an artist attending gallery previews and seldom offered any refreshment more than water, Ali meditates on this seemingly flippant form of exclusion. A simple matter of being overlooked whilst others indulge in wine is something Ali has attempted to come to terms with until now.  She discusses to what extent this ‘innocent’ marginalisation will continue and invites contemplation of deeper underlying issues.  Ali brings together a series of photographic prints taken on preview nights, capturing moments of feeling side-lined and developing an exquisite print diary of her documentation.

For further details visit the exhibition page.

Ali is also currently exhibiting in group show Push and Pull (New Adelphi Gallery, University of Salford) and PRINT UnLtd. (Salford Museum and Art Gallery).

Dates: Saturday 30 June – Saturday 11 August 2018, open Saturdays 11am – 5pm or by appointment
Venue: PAPER Gallery, Manchester
Admission: Free

Push and Pull

Artists: Lubna Ali, Claudia Alonso, Maurice Carlin, Cecile Elstein, Michael Green, Kip Gresham, Sadé Mica, Richard Riley, Paul Ritchie, Alan Whitehead

Push and Pull draws together prints made in and around Salford and Manchester from the late 1970s to the present day, including works made at the Manchester Print Workshop, Hot Bed Press and Islington Mill alongside new work by University of Salford graduates.

The artists in this exhibition experiment with process, pattern and repetition, as well as considering physicality and the body. They interrogate both the methods and labours of printmaking practice as well as the labours of existing and surviving as an artist/worker today.

The exhibition coincides with Print UnLtd. at Salford Museum and Art Gallery (open until 14th October) which includes new commissions by Lubna Ali, Claudia Alonso, Joey Collins and Gwilym Hughes.

Artists: Lubna Ali, Claudia Alonso, Joey Collins, Gwilym Hughes

Challenging and questioning perceived constricts and rules around printmaking, four North West artists have been commissioned to create new work for this pop-up exhibition and the University of Salford Art Collection.

Graduate Scholars and current resident artists at Hot Bed Press Lubna Ali and Claudia Alonso were invited to produce new work for the exhibition. Ali challenges the notion of the value of a print, using geometric patterns inspired by her Islamic heritage, while Alonso explores sculptural forms as print.

Artists Joey Collins and Gwilym Hughes were commissioned following selection from an open call for submissions. Collins gathers source material from the streets and allows chance to play an integral part to the way he approaches his practice. Hughes abstracts anonymous faces found in Salford Museum’s stores.

Each artist was given a commissioning fee, free access to Hot Bed Press facilities and resources plus mentoring and technical support tailored the artists’ needs.

LightNight: PRESENCE: A Window into Chinese Contemporary Art

LightNight is the Liverpool’s one night arts festival – a time for visitors of all ages to come along and see the city in a new light with everything from large-scale light projections and live music to workshops and spoken word, art, crafts and theatre, street performance, walking tours, dancing and late-opening exhibitions taking place right across the city centre.

For LightNight, PRESENCE: A Window into Chinese Contemporary Art will have an evening opening to the general public with some added extras to enhance visitor experience.

Part of the evening will see Highlights tours run by volunteer invigilators for the exhibition. These volunteers are passionate about the exhibition and will present one piece, explaining their personal reaction to the work and what they like about it.

In addition to the Highlights tours, there will be a musical performance of Jasmine Flower by Ciara and Eno. This is a Chinese folk song which is sung in Chinese by Ciara, a native English speaker, with lyrics and pronunciations taught by Eno, a native Mandarin speaker who will provide the melody on a piano.

An exciting element of the evening will also be the addition of an interactive Liverpool version of City DNA/Salford and Manchester, a piece by Lu Xinjian which features a creative map of Manchester and Salford. LightNighters will be invited to trace a giant map of Liverpool in multi-coloured felt tip pens to mark parts of a Liverpool map in the style of Lu Xinjuan’s iconic work.

Date: Friday 18 May 2018, 5 -9pm
Venue: The Vaults, St. George’s Hall, entrance via the Heritage Centre off St. John’s Lane, Liverpool
Admission:
